Artist Statement

For many years I concentrated on bead and quill work, now I look forward to increasing my knowledge and skill as a Pueblo potter in the tradition of my Ancestors. Having been nominated by the Poeh Cultural Center and Museum to it's Master’s Program and mentor to new students which has been great honor.

I believe that without a good foundation of the basics, you cannot expect to successfully move to the next level. Only by honing my basic skills  can I expand into new areas of creativity and disciples, as It is always important to maintain quality and integrity each step of the way.

My art work consists of traditional and contemporary Pueblo pottery, bead and quill work, as well as making moccasins.

All pottery pieces are handmade, using the hand rolled coil method. I use traditionally made clay and paints in building my pottery.

No molds, green ware or pottery wheel is used.

All pieces are authentically hand made by me and are my own style.

Biography

Jerry’s family originates from Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo, southeast of El Paso, TX.  The Pueblo was established in 1682 subsequent to the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, its people having originated from Isleta Pueblo, south of Albuquerque, NM.  Jerry is an enrolled tribal member of Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo.

Prior to 2007, Jerry’s primary art form had been bead and quill work, having demonstrated these techniques at the Academy of Science Folk Art programs in San Francisco, CA, and at The Festival at the Lake folk arts event in Oakland, CA.

Jerry continues to strive and increase his knowledge and skill as a Pueblo potter following in the footsteps of his Ancestors.  He was nominated to the Poeh Cultural Center and Museum Master’s Program and mentor to new students.

Jerry believes that without a good foundation of the basics, you cannot expect to successfully move to the next level and expand into new areas of creativity.  It is always important to maintain quality and integrity each step of the way.

Before the clay is gathered, prayers and offerings are made, asking for forgiveness of our Mother, as we cut into her, gathering only what is needed and using it in a respectful way.

Clay has a spirit, it is an entity and is to be respected. As clay has a spirit, you may start off with something in mind for a piece, and then the clay may go in a direction other than what you thought.  I speak to the piece and ask to guide me as I work with it, taking the shape and direction the clay wants.
